About the Data

Every station on EVAtlasUSA comes from the Alternative Fuel Data Center (AFDC), run by the National Laboratory of the Rockies (formerly the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, NREL) for the U.S. Department of Energy — the same federal dataset that powers most third-party EV charging maps and apps.

What's included

We pull electric-only stations marked operating in the AFDC — not planned, not temporarily unavailable. For each one we show the network, connector types (CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, Tesla), how many DC fast and Level 2 chargers are on site, access type, hours, and when the AFDC last confirmed the listing.

How current it is

Station operators self-report to the AFDC, and the federal dataset is refreshed continuously but individual stations can go stale — a charger can be offline, relocated or decommissioned before its listing catches up. Each station page shows its last confirmed date; treat older dates with more caution and always check the network's own app before counting on a specific charger.

Stations per 100,000 people

Our own calculation: a state's station count divided by its population (U.S. Census Bureau), scaled to 100,000 residents. It measures how built-out the infrastructure is relative to population, not how easy any one trip will be — a large rural state can have plenty of stations per person and still leave long gaps on the map.

What's not here yet

Route-planning (charging stations along a specific highway) and a directory of EV models are planned additions, not in this version. Station locations are matched by the city name the AFDC itself reports — a full spatial match to Census place boundaries is a later refinement.
