- DC fast charging
- The fastest widely-available charging type — typically adds well over 100 miles of range in 20-30 minutes, depending on the vehicle and charger. Used for road trips and quick top-ups, not overnight charging.
- Level 2 charging
- Standard 240-volt charging — the kind found at homes, workplaces and most public parking. Takes hours rather than minutes, but is far more common than DC fast charging.
- Level 1 charging
- Charging from a standard 120-volt household outlet — the slowest option, adding only a few miles of range per hour. Rare at public stations; mostly relevant at home.
- CCS (Combined Charging System)
- The standard DC fast-charging connector for most non-Tesla EVs sold in the U.S. Shown here as "CCS (J1772 Combo)", the AFDC's own label for it.
- CHAdeMO
- An older DC fast-charging connector standard, used by some older EV models (notably early Nissan Leafs). Increasingly rare on new vehicles and new stations.
- J1772
- The standard connector for Level 1 and Level 2 (non-fast) charging on nearly all non-Tesla EVs sold in the U.S.
- Tesla / NACS connector
- Tesla's charging connector, used at Tesla Superchargers and increasingly opened up to other manufacturers as the North American Charging Standard (NACS). Shown here as reported by the AFDC.
- AFDC (Alternative Fuel Data Center)
- The federal database of alternative fuel stations — electric, propane, natural gas and more — operated by the National Laboratory of the Rockies (formerly NREL) for the U.S. Department of Energy. The source for every station on this site.
- Operating status
- Whether the AFDC currently lists a station as open ("operating") versus planned or temporarily unavailable. We only show operating stations, but this is a periodically-confirmed status, not a live feed.
- Stations per 100,000 people
- Our own calculation: a state's station count divided by its population, scaled to 100,000 residents. Measures build-out relative to population, not how convenient any one trip will be.
